 About the prizes

Since about 10 years ago, the procedure for awarding SGF prizes has been gradually amended in order to adapt the definition of these prizes to the natural evolution of the research environment, both in basic and applied science. These changes are the following:

  • All SGF members, and not only members of the Prizes Committee, can now propose candidates. If not present (at the meeting), they must provide a pre-report to justify their proposals and suggest the names of two rapporteurs.

  • Participation of the SGF Scientific advisory council in the designation of candidates, at the first meeting of the Prizes Committee.

  • Creation of the best-thesis Prize of SGF (Van Straelen prize), with a profile alternating Earth-surface and Earth-depth. This annual prize is endowed with 2 287 euros and coupled with the prizes of CNFG and SFMC (en toutes lettres). Each beneficiary of the Van Straelen Prize becomes member of the Prizes Committee.

Each year, SGF awarded about 6 prizes, but the Board can, depending on circumstances, modify their number and thematic distribution. As a consequence, the Board decided on 16 October 2001 to set at 3 the number of prizes awarded annually. However, the Gaudry and Wegmann prizes will still be awarded on an irregular time basis, upon proposal from the Board, whereas the Van Straelen prize remains annual.

The term of new members of the Prizes Committee will from now on be restricted to 5 years.

The new scenario of prize awarding is described hereafter. Considering that 3 prizes out of 12 must be awarded annually, a quadriennal cycle is established:

  • year A: prizes Fontannes, Pruvost, Furon
  • year B: prizes Gosselet, Barrabé, de Lamothe
  • year C: prizes Prestwich, Viquesnel and Barbier
  • year D: prizes Millot, Bertrand, Bourcart

The Bertrand and Gosselet prizes will be awarded , as before, alternately to an academic and to a practitioner.

 The prizes

Following is the list of SGF prizes, with short summaries of their profiles (specifications):

Being awarded in alternance with the Prestwich prize, it rewards, depending on the year, persons who have developed applications of Earth Sciences in all sectors, societies or services, or persons who have illustrated the research carried out in all french laboratories, institutes and organisations

Fontannes: rewards the author of a research in stratigraphy

Gosselet: awarded for research on water, the environment, civil engineering (biennially to a practitioner), applied geology

Viquesnel: aimed at encouraging geological studies, awarded for research on inner-earth geology, to be published in the Bulletin or the Memoirs

Bertrand: awarded to a member of SGF for research in applied geology on mineral and energetic substances (biennially to a practitioner)

Pruvost: structural geology

Barrabé: for a physical, geophysical, geochemical or numerical approach to geology

Barbier: civil engineering, hydrogeology, metallogeny, mineral substances and fossil fuels. Applied geology.

Furon: geology of endogenous systems

de Lamothe: paleontology, micropaleontology, biostratigraphy
