Anyone can apply to become a SGFR member. We welcome all applicants, and will work with you to determine if becoming a SGFR member is right for you. The only prerequisites are an able body, a good attitude, a clean driving record, RCMP background check, and clearance from your doctor.
To begin the application process, please contact SGFR to set up an in person appointment via this website (see contact page), through e-mail (sgfr.chief@rdffg.bc.ca), or by phone (250-963-8805).
Nope, not at all! All necessary training will be provided by SGFR at no cost to you (* any paperwork/background check fees incurred in applying will be reimbursed).
You should join the SGFR team because it's a great way to give back to your community and keep everyone safe. Teamwork, hard work (and laughter) are essential to who we are at SGFR. We are dedicated members who care deeply about the well being of our community. We believe that there is always more to do and learn, and there's no such thing as a silly question. Everyone's unique skills and life experiences makes SGFR what it is, and maybe you are the next key member of SGFR. You'll never know until you try, so reach out to us and we'll be more than happy to answer your questions.
SGFR is a paid on call fire department. What that means is that members who attend training nights and respond to call outs receive a small hourly honorarium to show our appreciation for your time and effort. Once you are a fully responding member, you will be paid $40 for each Tuesday training night you attend, and you will be paid $20/hr for each call out with a minimum of 2 hrs per call out. Extra coursework and weekend/evenings spent at the fire-hall are not compensated, though snacks and beverages are always provided.
Every SGFR member is expected to attend as many Tuesday training nights as possible, and occasional weekend courses as decided alongside our officers. Once you are a fully responding member it is expected that you attend as many call outs as you are able to. Often call outs happen during the middle of the night, on holidays, or during inconvenient moments such as a family dinner. Although this is a serious and substantial commitment of time and effort, the hours are somewhat flexible, and most people find they are able to meet the expectation of time commitment/training participation. Regardless of what other personal and professional commitments you have (out of town work, shift work, or a fluctuating family schedule), we do our best to support each other and fill in where we can, we just expect you to communicate your availability clearly and attend as often as you are able to.
