Training Expectations
No previous experience required. Weekly training nights take place at the SGFR fire hall, starting 6:30pm with a quick meeting to go over important updates/questions, and overview the training plan for the night.
Training then occurs until 8:45pm, followed by a quick recap of lessons learnt, then cleanup.
Training topics include, but are not limited to: structure fires, wildfires, pumps and hoses, scene size up, radio communication, road safety/traffic control, MVI/ Auto extrication techniques (jaws of life), rope rescue, HAZMAT, apparatus handling/maneuvers, PPE/SCBA use, ladders, forcible entry, and various medical training. Training methods consist of a variety of hands on learning, scenarios, and classroom education and presentations from relevant sources such as BC Wildfire Service, BCEHS, and more.
Additional in-person weekend training courses often occur at various locations around the Prince George area, and participation will be based on experience and skill-level. All training and course fees are covered by SGFR (no cost to you!). If you require additional support and or want to brush up on certain skills, SGFR members complete truck checks and hall maintenance on Sundays, and all are encouraged to assist/learn.
***Please note that we are a paid on call fire department. Once you are a fully responding member, you will be paid an honorarium at $40 for each Tuesday training night you attend, and you will be paid $20/hr for call-outs (minimum 2 hr payment each call).
